Vlacherna - Vytina
If you want to cross on of the biggest paths of Mount Mainalos, then the Vlacherna - Vytina trail can be a challenging invitation. The yellow pathway starts from the alpine village of Vlacherna and climbs all the way up until Missoneri, at 1.300 meters of altitude. From then on, the route moves on low gradients and passes through gorgeous forests, while crossing the pathway that provides sufficient trail signs.
E33 National Trail
If you want to get from the mountain to the sea, then you can follow the E33 National Trail that connects the village of Agios Petros in Kynouria with the gorgeous Cape Malia, which means that it connects Arcadia with Laconia. The route starts from the historic village of Kynouria and it passes through the biggest part of Mount Parnon’s ridge.
Elati - Xerovouni - Radou
If you feel up to a route that requires real stamina, then the Elati - Xerovouni - Radou trail awaits you. The starting point is the village of Elati and the pathway passes through a dense forest, full of fir trees, black pines, chestnut trees, and cedars. The route goes on for about 6 hours and it’s 9.427 meters long. It requires attention, since the direction signs are rather poor, though the experience is extremely rich.
Levidi - Mainalos Shelter - Roino
If you are ready for a difficult route that requires extra reserves of adrenaline, then the Levidi - Mainalos Shelter - Roino trail will pump you up. It starts from the village of Levidi and enters a forest, which heads up to a big and rather demanding gorge. Just a bit after the ravine, the peak of Prophet Elias appears, at 1.980 meters of altitide.
The “Love Path” in Vytina
If you want to experience something truly romantic, then Vytina will show you the love. The Love Path used to be the street where the young people of the village met their future wives and husbands. It was back in the years where things were more, let’s say, strict. The road is full of plane and fragrant maples trees, while the birds don’t stop tweeting.
Agios Vlassios Monastery - Clissoura
If you want to take an agricultural walk, then the Agios Vlassios Monastery - Clissoura trail is a great choice for you. It was the main pathway from the villages of Trikala to Mount Ziria for the farmers, the locals, and the summer visitors. The pathway starts 100 meters after the monastery, it passes through a forest of conifers, and mounts up to Ziria, while giving you the complete picture of the local life.
E4 Long Distance Trail
If you want to walk on a trail that touches most of Europe’s grounds, then you should explore the E4 Long Distance Trail. The core of continental Greece intersects with the E4 Long Distance Trail (-GR), which starts from the Pyrenees and reaches Greece at the military guard of Nike in Florina, via Serbia. The E4 crosses the Peloponnese, stops at Gythio, and continues in Crete.
Iera Moni Panagias - Kefalari
If you enjoy the paths that run through streams and all kinds of water springs, then the Iera Moni Panagias - Kefalari trail should be a blast. It’s part of an old pathway that connects Trikala with the village of Feneos. It starts from the Middle Village of Trikala and leads to the 16th century church of Iera Moni Panagias.
Kefalari - Lake Dassiou - Zacharias - Kleftaki
If you want to hike “Swiss” style, then the Kefalari - Lake Dassiou - Zacharias - Kleftaki trail will really impress you. The route starts from the M.Trikala - Lake Dassiou - Goura Forest Road, it passes through the north bank, and mounts up to the ridge. From there, it branches toward Kleftaki or toward Zacharia, if you turn left.
If you want to go to an unrealistically quiet place, then Lake Doxa will quench your need. It may be an artificial lake, but it completely blends with its natural surroundings. The trail starts from the village of Feneos, passes through Olvio River, the village Steno with the unique plane tree that sprouts water, and it continues until the village of Goura.
Mount Ziria Trails
If you want to roam around a mythical mountain that’s very rich in nature and history, then you should explore Mount Ziria. It’s the second highest mountain of the Peloponnese and it consists of 2 blocks: Big Ziria (2.374 meters) and Small Ziria (2.117 meters), while the Flambouritsa Valley conceivably divides them. Also, the grandiose cave that Hermes, the messenger god, was born is located within the valley.
Upper Trikala - Perdicoula
If you want to hike a mountain and have a great sea view, then the Upper Trikala - Perdicoula trail grants your wish. It starts from the Trikala - Oropedio Road and the path is right after the col. The route passes through ultra green hills and gorgeous valleys, until it ends up at the peak of Perdikoula. The view from the top makes everything worthwhile and you feel on top of everything.
If you want to reach the peak of the mountain that’s the birthplace of a god and has a divine view, then you have to conquer the Ziria Peak trail. The route starts from the spring that’s located after the big shelter A’. The pathway mounts up toward the small shelter B’, through a rough dirt road. The marked path begins from the point of shelter B’ and it moves upward.
Tsintzina - Ai Giannis
If you want to go on a mini hike, the trail that leads to the cave church of Ai Giannis is an ideal pick. It’s literally hooked on a steep slope, about 200 meters higher from the village, and it has a brilliant panoramic view. Its exterior is a fortress with casemates, while its interior contains 3 levels. The top level has Christian paintings on the walls of the cave, which add an extra touch to your visit.
Tsintzina - Keli - Potistres
If you want to “move mountains”, then the bold trail Tsintzina - Keli - Potistres is your powerful choice. The marked pathway (with an orange triangle) has a circular direction and it’s almost 10 kilometers long. The route begins from the village of Veroia, it crosses the locations of Keli and Keli’s Spring, and it extends to the location of Potistres. On the way back to Tsintzina, the path passes by the little church of Agia Marina.
Tsintzina - Meganilias - Rachi Psari - Kosmas
If you're up for a big challenge, then you can test yourself all along the way of the Tsintzina - Meganilias - Rachi Psari - Kosmas trail. It’s a great crossing of Mount Parnon’s south ridge and the marked pathway (red triangle) starts from the village. The route continues through the pathway of Prophet Elias and heads to Meganilias, the second highest peak of Mount Parnon, at 1.780 meters of altitude.
Tsintzina - Moni Agioi Anargyroi
If you want check out a true “champion” of natural landscapes, then you can follow the trail to the monastery of Agioi Anargyroi. It has a marked pathway (with a blue triangle) that follows the stream with a circular direction. It’s a 4.5 kilometers route and the hike lasts approximately 1.5 hours. The return is marked with a blue square and it shows you the way back to the village, back to relaxation and traditional food.
Vamvakou - Parnon Shelter - Megali Tourla - Moni Malevis
If you want to walk on some gorgeous grounds, then you should take the Vamvakou - Parnon Shelter - Megali Tourla - Moni Malevis trail. The marked path starts from Vamvakou, at 960 meters of altitude, in the slopes of Parnon. It’s a 2-hour route and it leads to the hiking shelter of Parnon, at 1.450 meters of altitude. The marked trail continues from the shelter to the peak of Megali Tourla, the highest top of Parnon (1.935 meters).
Anavryti - Agios Ioannis
If you want to enjoy all that nature has to offer in a short hike, then the Anavryti - Agios Ioannis trail satisfies your need. The village of Anavryti is the centre from which a lot of pathways head to Mount Taygetus, since it connects with a lot of hiking routes, as well as the E4 Long Distance Trail. One of its most interesting routes is the path that leads to the church of Agios Ioannis.
E32 National Trail
If you want to discover authentic spots full of tradition, then you can follow the E32 National Trail that connects Vytina with Kardamyli and Arcadia to Messenia. The route starts from the picturesque alpine village of Vytina and the journey is breathtaking.
Kalyvia Sochas - Socha - Lakomata - Tsarkos
If you want to experience nature at a moderate hiking level, then the Kalyvia Sochas - Socha - Lakomata - Tsarkos trail welcomes you. It starts from the village of Calyvia Sochas, it passes by the church of Zoodochos Pigi, and after 2 hours it reaches the picturesque village of Socha.
Koumousta - Moni Gola
If you want to hike into antiquity and medieval times, then the Koumousta - Moni Gola trail will be rather rewarding. The pathway starts from the medieval village of Koumousta, at 750 meters of altitude. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the end, the church of Moni Gola, the only church in the south of Greece that has paintings of ancient philosophers.
Koumousta - Pendavloi/Taygetus Shelter
If you want to experience a relatively “light” hike with a medieval touch, then the Koumousta - Pentavloi/Taygetus Shelter is just what you want. The eco pathway starts from the medieval village of Koumousta, at 750 meters of altitude, and leads to the forest of Pendavloi, at 1.200 meters of altitude. It’s a beautiful 2-hour hike of 7 kilometers that passes through springs, waterfalls, and lakes that you can swim in.
Mystras - Taygeti - Moni Faneromenis
If you want to take a “recreational” hike, then the Mystras - Taygeti - Moni Faneromenis will satisfy you completely. It starts from the stone pathway, 320 meters north of Mystras, and it heads 700 meters north, until the village of Taygeti. It’s a 2.5 kilometers route and it lasts approximately an hour. There’s a beautiful water spring at the village’s entrance, which is also the starting point for a different pathway.
Parori - Panagia Laggadiotissa - Panagia Zagouna - Moni Faneromenis
If you want to start hiking at a slow pace, then you can pick the Parori - Panagia Laggadiotissa - Panagia Zagouna - Moni Faneromenis trail. The route starts from Parori village, which gives you a spectacular view of Laconia. After 15’ of hiking, the path meets with the cave church of Panagia Laggadiotissa and then follows the church of Panagia Zagouna, which is located within a large cave.
Pigi Magganiari - Taygetus Shelter - Prophet Elias Peak
If you want to enjoy a really “top” hike, then the Pigi Magganiari - Taygetus Shelter - Prophet Elias Peak trail is the way. The main path starts from Pigi Magganiari, at 980 meters of altitude, and crosses the alpine forest. The route crosses twice the forest track that connects the spring of Magganiari with the forest of Pendavloi.
