The port of Sparta is a picturesque seaside town with many neoclassical buildings, quaint narrow alleyways and typical island character.

Take a walk aroundthe beautiful port and visit the Town Hall with its spacious courtyard, the Cultural Center housed in what was once the all-female Secondary School and Tzanetakis Tower on Kranae Islandlinked to the peninsula by a narrow strip of land, where legend says Helen of Troy and Paris set sail for the young prince’s homeland. Go all the way up to the small monasteryon the top of the hill of Gytheio and reward yourself with a great view of the sea and the city. After discovering some of Gythio’s best beauty spots, enjoy a swim in the sea and a meal of freshly caught fish next to where the fishing boats arrive home with their latest catch. The nearby sandy beaches ofMavrovouni and Selinitsa are considered among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and all along the coastline you can pick and choose between some amazing swimming spots. Finally, the sandyValtaki beach provides you with the extra attraction of a shipwreck, the hull of the ill-fated “Demetrios” washed up from the depths!
