“… neither the waves nor the wind hits it anymore…” These are the words of the beloved writer Andreas Karkavitsas to describe the port of Gerakas in his book “Words of the Prow”.

It’s true. The port is built in a fjord, always protected from the winds of the Myrtoan Sea. Above the few houses, you will see dry stone walls, made of gray ironstone rocks, cleaved, weathered and sharpened by the wind and time. And among them, among the mastic tree shrubs, the brambles and the green glossy sea onions, you will see the few remnants of the glorious ancient town of Zarakas. Zarakas is located exactly on the border between Argos and Sparta and was the apple of discord until 272 BC., when Cleonymus of Sparta along with his men turned it into dust. Apart from the monument, it is also worth visiting Gerakas for a tasty tour in its small fish taverns. Try local flavors of the region of Morea such as saitia (mini herb pies with cheese and dill), garidopetoules (delicious greek-style mini shrimp pancakes) and gogges (local handmade pasta). Crunch the mouthwatering delicacies next to the fishing boats and the few sailing boats, enjoy a hearty plate of shrimp spaghetti or a large grilled sea bream and find the only grocery store in the village to taste – if you are lucky – the legendary touloumotiri, a unique local cheese with a really strong smell, which is produced in the wider area of Zarakas, up to the village of Kyparissi.
