Just before the fir-covered slopes begin their ascent to the summitof MountMainalo, you’ll arrive in Vytina. Here is an opportunity to take unforgettable mountain walks, with frequent stops for great healthy gulps of mountain air and pure water from the burbling springs along the way. So enchanting is the scenery here that you could almost imagine playing hide and seek with themischievous god Pan and the Dryad nymphs or that the mellifluous tones of Apollo’s lyre are wafting on the breeze.

At the entrance of Vytina, you cannot fail to be impressed by the building of the Triantaphyllideios Forestry School and the primary school donated by the benefactor Andreas Syggros. Close by is an irresistible invitation to the romantics among you to take a stroll hand in hand down the leafy ‘Lovers’ Lane’. For the more sober kind of education, there is also the old school built in 1831 “with the assistance of Governor IoannisKapodistrias” and a library which has been operating since 1800. The main road passes through the square, on which stands the imposing parish church of Saint Tryphon. Surrounding it are traditional picturesque cafes and restaurants with delicious dishes, gift shops with wood carvings and other local products, a variety of honey made out of vanilla spruce being a particular treat.
